The report summarizes the main findings from the two side-events as well as previous CEWP Business Program activities related to Industrial Water and Urban Water during 2019-2021. Further, it summarizes the main elements of the 14th 5-Year Plan.
Finally, the report presents four suggestions for Draft Policy Recommendations to improve market functioning for fostering a sustainable water sector. The Draft Policy Recommendations will be updated prior to the CEWP Joint Steering Committee meeting anticipated for June 2022.
The report shows that the Chinese Market for Water Technologies is expected to continue its significant growth rate during the coming 5 years. European companies already present in China before the Covid-19 Pandemic have experienced very good business results, while companies not present have been prevented form seeking market opportunities there due to the severe constraints on international travel.
The 14th 5-Year Plan continues the efforts laid down by the Chinese Government to address the countries environmental problems and deliver a green transition towards Ecological Civilization. Among the 8 binding targets in the 14th 5-Year Plan, 5 are related to green transition, while none of the binding targets relates to economic development.
While the vast economic scale of this market holds significant potential, European Companies not present in China should take into account that Chinese Companies have continued developing and diversifying their technological solutions and services, which calls for the European Companies to prepare even more thoroughly, being very accurate in defining their anticipated niche and market entry strategy.
