Water Management and Ecological Security

Problems and drivers
Water Management & Ecological Security focuses on the best ways to implement Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at River basin level, involving all users in order to increase efficiency of water use, address point and diffuse pollution, restore ecological functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity on water bodies.

Policy justification
Both in China and in the EU the environment and biodiversity are at the top of agenda priorities. Excellence and quality are results of decades of work to mitigate and restore the impacts of economic activities in the environment. Many EU legislative acts are the motor for innovative ways to promote better and efficient water management and ecological security in Europe and can be a starting point to promote same approach in China. Nevertheless, schemes for payment for ecosystem services and ecosystem services valuation in China is frequently mentioned as good large-scale processes that can be replicated in Europe.

Overall objective
The overall objective is to further enhance the cooperation and exchange of knowledge between China and EU countries on ways to increase efficiency of water use, address point and diffuse pollution, restore ecological functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity on water bodies.
