EU – China Strategic Knowledge Exchange on Groundwater Policy, Legislation, and Standards – June 2016

June 2016 offered a unique opportunity for policy dialogue between EU and China, when the Development Research Centre of the Ministry of Water Resources hosted 11 EU and Chinese experts in a Strategic Knowledge Exchange on the future Chinese Groundwater Policy, Legislation and Standards in preparation by the Ministry of Water Resources.

The EU China team comprised 11 experts, 8 from Spain, Italy, Denmark and China supported by the EU Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Facility (TAIEF) and 3 members of the Danish working group responsible for the Danish Co-lead of Focus Area 2: Rural Water and Food Security of the China Europe Water Platform as well as the Danish bi-lateral cooperation with China on groundwater management, use and protection.

The team had in-depth exchanges with experts and staff of the Development Research Centre, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Centre for Irrigation and Drainage Development. The mission culminated in a workshop in which the expert team presented EU and Chinese experiences and recommendations for staff from Ministry of Water Resources, water sector institutes and provinces in north-eastern China, where declining groundwater resources and groundwater quality pose a serious risk to future water and food security.

The strategic knowledge exchange was excellently hosted by the Development Research Centre in cooperation with Ministry of Water Resources.
